Our second stop in Sri Lanka was Galle. We hired a car & driver for about £35/$50 for the hour journey from Wadduwa, taking the new freeway (Tip: ALWAYS take the new freeway!) and we pulled into the insanely beautiful and traditional Tamarind Hill Hotel.
We don’t usually visit locations for the hotel, but this is a very special hotel and I would love to visit again.
Tamarind Hill is steeped in history, it was originally built as a home for a Dutch captain and his admiral. It has been extended in the same style and with its 13 rooms sits on the hillside.
The hotel is so beautiful that we didn’t want to leave, especially when we were kindly upgraded to the Admiral Suite, which had an enormous bedroom, living room, double bathroom, terrace for 16 and a private balcony where we enjoyed a lovely private dinner with lobster and champagne!
We did visit Galle, which is an interesting old forte, which is easy to see in the back of a tuk tuk that’s quite an experience driving quickly around the old buildings with monkeys running through the trees and across the roof tops.
At sunset we decided to go back to the Tamarind Hill and enjoy the gorgeous room and grounds. We swam in the outdoor pool until dark, when we were visited by bats and frogs, who sang to us as the sky turned black.
I highly recommend the Tamarind Hill, the staff was so friendly, food was lovely, the historic building is stunning with luxe traditional art and furnishing. It was definitely luxury and at only $250 is was one of the cheapest we stayed in Sri Lanka – and thank you Tamarind Hill for the upgrade, birthday cake and flowers!
