Scotland’s leading dance company has unveiled its Stravinsky season which will be available to play on BBC iPlayer for the first time as part of BBC Arts’ commitment to bring performance to the widest possible audience.  The Rite of Spring and The Fairy’s Kiss are now both available from Thursday 14 of December and will be available for 60 days only.

This marks the first time the company has captured a live performance which was made possible by the support of digital commissioning agency The Space, an organisation funded by BBC, Arts Council England, Creative Scotland and Arts Council Wales to deliver greater access to the arts using digital media and platforms.

Both performances were filmed by award-winning TV director Ross McGibbon at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh as part of the Scottish Ballet Autumn Season 2017.  The dramatic double bill of works by Stravinsky features a rarely staged early work by Kenneth Macmillan – the Fairy’s Kiss, which was also performed by Scottish Ballet in their Royal Opera House premiere performance as part of the national dance companies tribute to Sir Kenneth in October 2017.  Alongside it, The Rite of Spring is choreographed by Scottish Ballet’s Artistic Director and CEO, Christopher Hampson and is widely acclaimed following its premiere in 2013.

Christopher Hampson, Artistic Director / CEO commented:
‘It is exciting to know that audiences across the UK will have on-line access to two full works by Scottish Ballet.  This is part of the company’s continued development and commitment to our digital audience and follows on from our award-winning Digital Season in Spring 2017.’

Fiona Morris, CEO and Creative Director of The Space said:
“We’re delighted to be supporting Scottish Ballet in its mission to extend its reach and broaden its audience online. This is a great performance from one of our most impressive national performance companies and we are delighted to see it presented on the BBC iPlayer so more people can experience the work and the company.’

Peter Maniura, Head of Digital Development, BBC Arts added:
‘BBC Arts Digital is very pleased to make both of these wonderful productions available and to continue our partnership with Christopher and his innovative company in order to showcase Scottish Ballet’s excellent work and help it to reach the widest possible audience.’
