What could be better than a lie-in on a Sunday morning? A workshop with Mercedes Ruiz.
Her Buleria workshop was aimed at the intermediate level, so everyone in the class already knew the basics and rhythms of the dance. The Jerez style of buleria is cheeky, playful and energetic, and is traditionally performed at the end of flamenco shows. Mercedes certainly makes it look easy and natural when she dances. She is also a brilliant teacher, performer and choreographer – one of very few flamenco professionals who possesses all these attributes. In fact, teaching flamenco and challenging students without intimidating them is a talent in its own right. Those of us on the receiving end can sense when a teacher really enjoys working with students. Dancing with Mercedes was pure joy, I came home inspired, clutching a piece of her spirit and energy.
