Acclaimed choreographer Johan Inger‘s award winning production of Carmen is set to make a triumphant return to Semperoper Dresden this March. Semperoper Ballett Director Aaron S. Watkin first presented Inger’s interpretation of this classic tale of erotic passion, freedom, and jealousy in 2019, and it has been eagerly anticipated by dance lovers ever since.
Inger’s vision of Carmen is much closer to the original story by Prosper Mérimée than to the world-famous opera by Georges Bizet. His choreography places the inherent cruelty of Mérimée’s story at the heart of the performance, creating a sombre, mesmerising atmosphere, while still maintaining the ecstatic volatility of Bizet’s music.
Inger’s Prix du Benois de la Danse awarded Carmen focuses on the emotional struggle of the child and his childhood, enhanced by his unique interpretation through his transcription into contemporary dance.
