Aimee Thomson – Social Media Dance Star!

Aimee Thomson Dance Star

You may not have heard of the young Scottish ballet student Aimee Thomson, but you might just’ve seen photos of her dancing en pointe in the snow in New York that have gone viral around the world! Since then she’s been featured by Capezio who asked her to do an in store event at their flagship store this year and has also been invited to the YAGP next year. This storm may just change Aimee’s life and help her reach her ballet dreams! Aimee spoke to The Wonderful World of Dance about her journey so far…

Aimee now 13 started dancing aged 3 and her dreams of becoming a ballerina began after seeing the Scottish Ballet in her home town. At the young age of 9 Aimee successfully auditioned for the Scottish Ballet Associate Programme,”I always remember how daunting the experience was having to audition with all those other talented girls, at the time there was over 500 people auditioning for only 20 places.”

But Aimee has successfully auditioned every year since, “My experience with the Scottish Ballet associates has been the most amazing years of my training as they always drive you to be the best ballet dancer you can be, we have had amazing opportunities where company dancers come into class and teach us repertoire.”

Aimee is currently a Junior with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and training with Ballet West, her days include, “A good warm up and barre work, stretching, centre work and finish with allegro.”

Another notch on Aimee’s ballet belt was winning a scholarship with the British Ballet Organisation, “Gaining the scholarship with the BBO was another great opportunity to get more ballet training within great facilities and with great faculty members who taught me some different ballet methods.”

As part of the BBO Aimee was lucky enough to go to Elmhurst in Birmingham, “This was one of the highlights within my training with the BBO, a full intensive weekend of dancing was a great experience as I really got to see what it’s like to do full time training as a dancer starting at 9 in the morning and finishing near dinner time. It was hard going but it proved to me this was really what I want to do when I am older, I would highly recommend this intensive dance training as it will let you see if dance is right for you.”

This year Aimee’s going on to audition for a place as a senior within the Scottish Ballet Associate programme, “I know this is going to be more challenging but I have been training extremely hard in and out of the dance studio.”

But dancing and training is hard and comes at a price, one that every dance student knows all too well, but one that is worth it, “I may miss out on opportunities with friends but they understand how devoted I am to becoming a ballerina one day. If I was to say what I find hard, it would be that I have to show gracefulness even when I feel that I just want to sit down and relax!”

So it’s quite funny that Aimee was taking a holiday in New York for her 13th birthday when the storm and snow hit, which has led to so many new and exciting opportunities, “These photos have changed my life it just – goes to show the power of social media! I hit the national press and had radio interviews, I was then invited by the YAPG to participate in next year’s competition, I got featured by Capezio who also invited me to their flagship store for instore events, its been phenomenal for me, I have since had a photographer making me a portfolio of amazing dance photos which I am truly grateful for as these are just the best memories.”

YAPG – Youth America Grand Prix is an annual student ballet competition open to dance students 8-19 years old. It’s an intensive high level competition that would be daunting for any student, “If I’m honest I watch these competitions on YouTube and these are the dancers who I aspire to be one day, but never say never as I am still young and I do hope one year I will be able to compete.” Aimee is going to dedicate more time to training before heading off to the States again and in the future dreams of dancing in Swan Lake and Giselle just like her idols Darcey Bussell, Michaela DePrince and Misty Copeland.
